Overview

The LAYC Career Academy is seeking a skilled, dynamic, dedicated Student Support Specialist to join us in the on-going development of an exciting new educational community. The ideal candidate will have an energetic and flexible nature, and demonstrated success in: motivating; educating; developing curriculum; building a strong school culture; using data to drive instructional improvements; and achieving outstanding academic outcomes for disconnected youth.

School Description:

The LAYC Career Academy (LAYCCA) opened in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC in Fall 2012. LAYCCA sets high expectations for disconnected youth 16-24 years of age by providing a college preparatory, GED curriculum and the opportunity to gain college credits before graduation. The school is built upon the central beliefs that:

  • All youth can and must obtain either a college degree or industry-recognized credential.
  • Students grow by recognizing their own strengths, using them to overcome obstacles, and setting and achieving ambitious academic and career goals.
  • Disconnected youth will succeed academically and personally with the help of high-quality, culturally appropriate education and support services.

All graduates will complete a college preparatory curriculum that is aligned to Common Core State Standards and pass the GED exam. Students will also achieve one of three outcomes before graduating: become a Medical Assistant; become an A+ Certified Computer Hardware Technician; or complete six college credits through the Career Academy’s partnership with the Community College of the District of Columbia or Trinity College.

The LAYC Career Academy was founded by the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC), www.layc-dc.org. LAYC is a nationally recognized multi-cultural, multi-service agency serving low-income youth across the District of Columbia and in Maryland’s Prince Georges’ and Montgomery Counties. LAYC works with over 4, 000 individuals each year to support academic achievement, promote healthy behaviors, and guide youth toward successful adulthood.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of one year experience working with older, urban youth
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the tenets of Positive Youth Development
  • Demonstrating ability and experience in meeting the needs of a diverse population of youth
  • Knowledge of Washington DC community and local resources
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work as a member of a team
  • Flexibility, commitment, and enthusiasm
  • Ability to attain police, child abuse, and medical clearances
  • Spanish fluency strongly preferred

Ongoing Responsibilities

  • Establish positive relationships with all students in caseload to generate a safe space for mentoring and advising
  • Monitor academic progress and attendance through regular communication with students, teachers and staff
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with colleges, community colleges, alumni organizations, and others providing support for postsecondary education, especially for previously disconnected youth
  • Develop resource center for students in need of information about student financial aid and assist students to apply for Federal, District, school, foundation, and private financial aid
  • Teach job readiness classes and workshops and conduct group and individual career exploration activities
  • Work with students to help them identify their employment skills and career goals and set employment-related goals
  • Identify support needs, provide case management, and make necessary service referrals
  • Gather appropriate documents for students’ files; record all contacts with youth, family members, LAYC and LAYC CA staff, and representatives from other agencies involved in the provision of services; and track outcomes regularly in LAYC’s Efforts-to Outcome (ETO) database
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and student needs
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision with Director of Student Support Services
  • Attend all staff meetings and professional development sessions and participate actively
  • Other duties as assigned.
